Submitting someone else’s work as your own, claiming authorship of another person’s essay or project, copying someone’s words or ideas without proper citation, neglecting to use quotation marks for a direct quote, providing incorrect information about the source of a quote, and altering the words but maintaining the sentence structure of a source without citation are all forms of plagiarism. It is important to note that merely changing the words of an original source is not sufficient to avoid plagiarism. If the fundamental idea of the original source is retained and not properly cited, it still constitutes plagiarism, regardless of any alterations made to its context or presentation. However, plagiarism can be easily avoided by citing sources. Simply acknowledging that certain material has been borrowed and providing the necessary information for others to locate the source is usually enough to prevent plagiarism.
