Abstract:
The second half of the twentieth century produced many prominent poets of Urdu in the subcontinent. Some of those poets of the post-progressive movement and halqa-e-arbab-e-zauq era will be remembered for establishing new trends, forms, themes, techniques, and styles of Modern Urdu Nazm. Though after Iqbal, the poets like Miraji, Noon Meem Rashid, Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Makhdoom Mohiuddin and Akhtarul Iman played a leading role in carving the form and style of Urdu nazm, poets like, just to name a few, Ameeq Hanafi, Muneer Neyazi, Shaharyar, Qazi Saleem, Iftikhar Arif, Irfan Siddiqi, Amjad Islam Amjad, Baqar Mehdi, Afzal Ahmad Syed, Majeed Amjad, Zubair Rizwi, Mushaf Iqbal Tausifi, Nida Fazili, Muhammad Alwi, etc., will always be remembered for their distinct approach in nazmnigari. Shafiq Fatima Shera (1937-2012) belonged to that group of trend-setter poets, and she is the one whose poetry has its own thematic structure and style. Way back in 1995, Fuzail Jafri had remarked that, unlike her contemporaries, Shera didn’t assimilate herself with the modernist trend of her age, neither she opted to be part of any movement. Her poetry carved its niche.
